1 - Two links about Saudi Arabia. First there's Saudi Jeans' report from the Riyadh Book Fair '09 and then there's...wait a minute. I went back to link to Susie of Arabia's post on Saudi Arabian equestrian centers for women and it's not there anymore. Weird. It's still on my RSS feed, however, so here's a quote:

Although there are many things that women cannot do here in Saudi Arabia, horseback riding is not one of them. Private equestrian centers are places where women are free to take off their abayas and uncover their hair. I would imagine that this is not something that most Saudi women take advantage of, but it is more an activity that more Western women and their children might likely do. There is a passage in the Q'uran that specifically directs Muslims to teach children how to swim, shoot a bow and arrow, and ride a horse. Whether or not all Muslims follow this directive is unclear.

I particularly loved the book fair post. I'm always reading American book expo and comic con reports and they're all the same thing. Some humor, some bitching, some pictures and a generally positive outlook. When I read about the Saudi Book Fair, however, I learn that saleswomen aren't allowed in the building on the men's day. That's just unreal to me and makes me appreciate being a part of the American book industry. Could you imagine if one day of San Diego Comic-Con was for just men? No Slave Leia costumes? No Baroness? Just a bunch of overweight Qui-Gons and scrawny Spider-Men? Worst convention ever.
