LCS Predictions

The NLCS starts today and the ALCS starts on Friday. Before getting to my predictions let’s see how I did last week

1) I called the Sox over the Angels in 4 with a game 3 loss and I nailed it.
2) I called the Phillies sweeping the Brewers and they won in 4.
3) I called Tampa Bay sweeping the White Sox and they won in 4.
4) I called the Cubs over the Dodgers in 5 with a fair amount of drama. Dodgers swept the Cubs so I got the drama right but was totally off with the winner and the length of the series.

Alright – I’m thinking we’re going to get that Red Sox/Dodgers World Series but it’s going to take a while to get there.

The Dodgers were well behind .500 on the road this year and they’ll need to squeak at least one win out in Philly, who’s well above .500 at home. The Dodgers get two games at Philly with Lowe on the mound if the game goes the distance and they’ll take one of those. So I think this one’s going seven With the Dodgers winning two games with Lowe – game 4 and 7. I think Lowe’s not going to be able to handle the Phillies’ bats tonight, Ron Howard and crew has too much to prove. So Dodgers winning games 3, 4, 5, and 7.

Red Sox/Rays is really hard to call. All logic says the Red Sox should sweep the Rays. I don’t see the Rays’ pitching holding up against a post-season Sox team and there’s no comparison between the two teams bats, even without Lowell. Having said that, I still don’t get how the Rays win sometimes, so I can’t call this one in four. Dice-K is going to win tomorrow. He has a 2.35 ERA against the Rays this season, the Sox bullpen looks solid, and the bats are going to be swinging. I’m thinking we’re going to see one of those double-digit wins on Friday night. I think we’ll see a Rays resurgence and a Beckett loss in Game 2 followed by two wins for the Sox at Fenway (Wakefield losing) and a Game 6 victory and World Series ticket for the Sox in Tampa.

So…

Dodgers in 7, winning 3, 4, 5, and 7.
Sox in 6, winning 1, 3, 5, and 6.

What say you?

I love Wakefield, and I respect Wakefield. But, as poised as he is, I don't think he has the stuff for post-season play any longer. Or, rather, he cannot be relied on for those outings; his knuckleball can be devastating or it can be wholly ineffective, and only that night's physics will determine that.

I would have used Byrd as a starter instead of Wakefield myself, but otherwise I think the Red Sox will win, overall. Your picks are solid, Jason.

How strange to be supporting the Yankee-like team against the upstarts!

I agree. Wakefield is the kind of picture that's good to have over the course of a season. He's not built for the post-season anymore. Post-season needs clutch and, as you said, clutch doesn't mean relying on a knuckleball to work well in Game 4.

I like the Red Sox. Part of it comes from my 8-year-old memories of the '86 World Series, it was a good series (better for us Mets fans, of course), part of it's from living around the corner from Fenway for four years, part of it is hating the Yankees, but most of it comes from Robin. She's happy when they win and that makes me happy.

Now, if they were playing the Mets...fuck 'em.
