Congress failed to pass the $700-Billion rescue package. Here is the list of everyone who voted against it. If you believe that the bailout was necessary, or if you're sick out of eating spam as a result of economic collapse, do America a favor and vote these people out of their jobs and make them homeless, whether they're Democrat or Republican.

EDIT: And you know what, no matter how people try and spin it, Pelosi should have kept her fucking mouth shut. And Frank, too. Get both of them out of there while we're at it. Congress is broken.

Jason - this is uncharacteristic of you. Your previous post even lists a bunch of other ideas that would likely work better than the "throw money at the rich fucks who created this mess and hope it goes away" plan. Also, your comment about Pelosi is strangely negative. Pelosi didn't say anything that a grownup wouldn't be able to handle; the republicans' feelings were hurt so they voted against their so-called consciences? I don't know, I feel like I need more explanation on your perspective on this one.

Good call - I do tend to be knee-jerked at times...

Basically - we need something, and if we can't pass something as stupid and A-bomb like as this, we can't pass anything. And Pelosi can't say we need bipartisan support and then take that last minute jab, whether the repubs are whiners or not. Congress set a horrible precedent today, both sides are to blame, and I think it's obvious no action's going to be taken and we're just gonna see what happens.

It hurt their feelings?

Quite frankly - two weeks ago Shrub was saying "the economy is sound". Now it's the biggest crisis evar? And the solution is to pull as much money as possible out of the economy - not based on any real figures or "math", mind you, they just wanted to take as much as they could - and hand it upwards, to the richest people who were so out of control that their greed caused this mess? Come on man it stinks on ice. You know these people are not to be trusted whatsoever and everything they touch turns to shit. Put this in the context of all of the so-called emergencies that they trumped up and lied about (WMDs etc) AND the real crises that they completely ignored and bungled when they finally had to pay attention - Katrina - and then, after all that, we expect them to come up with a plan to take what's left of our treasury and save the economy? Thanks, but no thanks.

In fact, this is the time for a no-holds-barred progressive reorganization of our governmental priorities. The republicans and their so-called conservative agenda have finally been shown to be an unmitigated disaster. Now is the time for a new New Deal to get us back on track.

I know I am preaching to the choir, it just kind of spilled out. However you say "something must be done" but that's often taken to mean "anything is better than nothing". In this case, with the Bush "administration" in charge, I'd honestly rather let forces other than them decide what happens, because there is no doubt that they are acting in bad faith. A good idea doesn't need lies to sell it.

That is all.

Also on the subject of hurt feelings being a red herring - this.

And - I can't believe I actually agree with so many republicans on this one. This is not a good plan.

Lastly - I guess it's also just good to be communicating with you again. Look how far we've come from The Bucket Prank, bringing pillows to physics class, and stealing road work signs.

Heh - I just posted a lengthier response: http://www.jasonrodriguez.com/2008/09/congress-is-broken.html

And as I said in there, I do change my opinion quite rapidly.

I think, in terms of the global economy, in our ability to take the initiative and show that we can get our shit in order, should be a priority. I don't know - it's hard to form a solid opinion on this one. You're right, I have no trust in the current Administration but I usually don't throw blind trust behind the Democrats, either, so that's why I tend to sway.

It's the phasing of the plan that made it at least passable, to me. But, you're right, I'm probably being too optimistic in that regard.

But I think we both agree nothing productive is going to happen until January and, meanwhile, people across the globe are pulling their money out. The global economy runs on the ability to lend people money with the hope of some sort of return. As people pull their money out, there's no capital their to grow the economy and we reach a standstill or, worse yet, we spiral into a recession or, let's just say it, a depression.

And, yeah, it is good to chat these things up. We'd probably have done this in college, too, but we'd be smoking a bowl and you'd keep talking about how awesome Phish is.
